Owen’s breath puffed a cloud into the chilled winter air, and he rubbed his hands together. We stood at the base of the baby blue home, looking up the steps. “Ladies first,” Owen said, gesturing up the steps. I knocked on the door — softly at first, and then again, loudly. After a few moments, there was no hint of movement behind the door, so Owen moved to peek in the windows.

“Doesn’t look like anyone is home,” he said.

“Well, what now?” I asked, exasperated.

Owen leaned close and lowered his voice. “Try the door.”

I gave him a funny look, but placed my hand on the doorknob. “There is no way he’d keep it unlocked,” I replied, right before stumbling over the threshold as the door pushed open. I jerked back and slammed it shut again, then looked at Owen in alarm. “How did you know?”

“Small town,” he replied. “People think the postcard perfect look of Roslyn translates to safety. Murders and all. Anyway, this is perfect.” His eyes were imploring and wide. “You go in, I’ll stand guard out here. If anyone approaches, I’ll yell ‘Girl Scout Cookies!’ and you can race out the back. What do you think?”

“Girl Scout Cookies?” I asked.

“It has to catch your attention. Suburban enough not to grab anyone else’s,” he explained matter-of-factly.

The plan had merit, but it made me nervous. “Why don’t you go in there?” I asked.

Sal rubbed his head against my leg and snorted, causing Owen to laugh. “See? Even he agrees with me.”

“Well, what if Ben is just in the shower, or the toilet or something?”

“If he is, he’ll be much less reactive to the sight of an unexpected female than a male. I’ll have my ear to the door if you call out.”

I glared at him.

“Which you won’t have to do,” he quickly added.

I sighed. This really was the fastest way to get to the bottom of things, and since the door was unlocked, it wasn’t really breaking and entering, I decided, though I had no idea if that was true. I glanced at Owen as I walked in the front door.

Just one step in the house allowed me to survey the bulk of the small bungalow and I was grateful for its modest size. The kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom were all within view, along with a small sitting area. The first thing I did was tiptoe to the bathroom to make sure it wasn’t occupied. Thankfully, the door was wide open. I breathed a sigh of relief and peeked inside. There was a toothbrush on its side on the counter with a smudge of toothpaste still in the sink.

Wanting to get out of there, I hurried to the only bedroom. The bed linens were pulled tight with military precision. It appeared Ben enjoyed keeping his space organized, which made the toothpaste smudge seem odd in contrast. The drawers were empty except for one single sock, as though it had slipped out of his grip when he grabbed his items in a hurry.
